"A Successful In-Roof Solar System on a Period Property"

We believe the end result is a great example of a well-executed in-roof solar system on a period property. The project was perfectly timed by the homeowner to achieve three key objectives:

  1. Refurbishing the roof

  2. Significantly improving the property’s insulation

  3. Installing an on-site solar generation system

"Loft Room Insulation and Solar Panel Installation Options"

Some older buildings have loft rooms with no or little insulation. Its harder to fit insulation to loft rooms, particularly the sloping roof sections which are plastered.

The most common method is to install insulation between the rafters from the outside of the property while getting a re-roof (stripping tiles).

Insulation can also be fitted below the rafters, though this requires removing existing plasterwork and reducing the size of the loft room. Both techniques maintain what is known as a "cold deck roof."

Alternatively, insulation can be installed above the rafters, creating what is known as a "warm deck roof." This approach is less common, particularly when insulating an existing roof, and involves raising the roof slightly with counter battens.

If you have a warm deck roof and are considering solar, we highly recommend in-roof solar panels. This system is fixed to the battens (or laths), rather than the rafters, making it a more suitable option. Traditional on-roof solar panels are not ideal because the rafters are difficult to access and secure due to the insulation being in place.
