Panels are facing every direction on this roof (North, South, East and West). East and West facing solar is fairly common, east/west panels generate around 85% of the electricity of what an optimal south facing solar panel would generate.

North facing solar is becoming a lot more popular nowadays for a number of reasons. 1) Solar panels are so cheap people are using them for fencing. 2) North facing solar panels actually produce a reasonable amount of power (around 50 - 60% vs an optimal array). 3) The additional cost of adding some more panels on the north while you are installing anyway is fairly low 4) Return on investment for north facing panels is quite good so why not?
